Pablo Picasso says, “I don’t develop, I am”. I like this quote. So, what am I? What is my art style now?

I have gone through many phases of “ my art style” and I can only imagine and hope that I will continue to evolve. I know what I respond to in other people’s art, so I attempt to find that in my own. Presently, my artwork is mainly representational. I attempt to paint the expressive underlying structure and rhythmic shapes of unexpected color arranged in a pleasing and representational way. I am inspired to paint “what I love”. Sometimes it is figurative: family members or even trees or flowers. Other times it is places or scenes. Still other times it is an object that is in front of me that I will study and sketch for hours (a still life, my dog or cats.)

Although I love photography as an art form, I don’t want my paintings to look like photographs. I want to inspire a sense of recognition and connection from the viewer. I want a viewer to feel that same alert stillness that I felt when I painted it. Painting to me is both soothing and meditative, yet intense. I want to impart that feeling the only way I know how. Words are hardly ever enough for me to communicate what I feel, so I hope that through my artwork I can impart the emotion that my words cannot.
